Location:1101 Antoine Dr. Investigation Time:We went on October 18th and got to the cemetery around 9 pm. We stayed about three hours. Background:Woodlawn Cemetery is a well groomed and maintainted cemetery. Security is evident and the gates are locked at night. It's been noted as one of the most haunted cemeteries in Houston, but investigating after dark is difficult if not impossible. Be respectful of the cemetery or you will be asked to leave. On the paranormal side, EVPs have been reported, and auditory noises have been reported. Serial killer Dean Corll, who killed 27 kids from 1970 to August 8, 1973, has five victims buried in Woodlawn Cemetery. Other notable people buried in this cemetery are Marvin Zindler, the television personality who, along with fellow reporter Larry Conners, closed the Chicken Ranch in La Grange, after he made a news report on it in 1973. In addition to Mr. Zindler, there is adult film actress Chloe (Melinda Dee) Jones (Taylor), and Julissa D'anna Gomez, an olympic gymnast trained by Bela Karolyi. Julissa was practicing her weakest vault, the difficult and dangerous Yurchanko Vault, when she missed the springboard, hitting her head on the vaulting horse and breaking her neck. Although paralyzed from the neck down, she was immediately transported to a Japanese hospital, and placed on a respirator. A week later, doctors performed a tracheotomy to help her breathe on her own, although she remained on the respirator with oxygen supplied to her. The day before she was to return to the US, a second accident resulted in her being disconnected from her respirator and oxygen supply overnight, when nurses found her, she was in a coma with considerable brain damage. She remained in a catatonic state for the next three years, with her family caring for her most of the time. In August 1991, she contracted an infection and passed away. Due to her accident, major changes were made in the equipment: the vaulting horse was replaced with a vaulting table, and the springboard was modified to prevent this type of accident from happening again. But the most important change was to the code of points; anyone attempting the Yurchanko Vault without the new equipment would be given an automatic score of zero. We didn't want there to be any misunderstanding, and wanted to make sure he knew that if we were asked to leave, we would leave. The security guard gave us permission to continue in a respectful manner and we went on our merry way. We took numerous photographs and ran a constant video. Noises were unexplained until we figured out that a lot of the dropping thud noises were from acorns (the bane of the paranormal investigator!). A couple investigators reported hearing voices in the distance and seeing movement out of the corner of their eyes, but this was written off as it was not documented. Our special guest investigator, Patrick Theriot saw a shadow that blocked the light streaming out of the Mausoleum and ran to investigate immediately. We tried to duplicate what he saw with no success. Efforts to lighten the video taken from the camera have come up with nothing as well. Mosquitos were living happily in this cemetery, probably from the numerous vases around the tombstones, so be prepared with bug spray. Our equipment on this outing was one digital recorder, constantly recording, one video camera with nightvision, two SLR digital cameras and four investigators: Benjamin D. Nowlin, Andrea Nowlin, Stewart McCauley and guest investigator Patrick Theriot from G.H.O.S.T. Conclusion:After reviewing the evidence collected at the cemetery, we were pleasantly suprised. We came up with numerous EVPs, a couple which were very distinct. We also collected a reproduction of a picture of another picture taken by a G.H.O.S.T. member, this time taken by Stewart McCauley (who didn't know where the original picture was taken), about twenty feet from where the original picture was taken. These pictures are available for your comments on the site now. There were numerous occasions when we experienced that 'creepy' vibe at this cemetery, but the background noise of the freeway made it difficult to review the recordings. The video camera didn't have the IR blaster on it (as we don't have it yet), so we didn't get much in the way of recording either. However, despite these challenges, I still consider this a successful investigation. We caught numerous EVPs and all felt energized when we left the cemetery. I would give this place a 4 our of 5 on our haunted scale. If you go, be respectful, and it wouldn't hurt to bring flowers and stand up anything you see laying over and help keep the cemetery looking as nice as it does now. Comments
